I used to wonder the same thing.. where did AA have its planes deployed on the day before the BNA hub opened, or the day before the RDU hub opened. Each of those hubs required about 40 mainline aircraft.
Unfortunately I don't have any AA timetables to research the question, nor had I ever paid much attention to AA before those hubs opened.
Both BNA and RDU hubs were established during the delivery of 260 MD-80s to AA and both hubs relied heavily on older commuter aircraft (Shorts 330s, 360s, Fairchild Metros, Beech, Jetstreams, etc). In the early 1990s, AA took delivery of 75 F-100s primarily for use at BNA and RDU.
