Divide the ticket cost by the number of miles needed for the ticket for award travel.
$500 ticket / 25,000 miles is 2 cents a mile for example.
2.75 cents a mile would only apply for Envoy class and *maybe* first class.
No one in their right mind would pay 2.75 cents per mile for coach.
People do all the time. Keep in mind that with my US MC, I can get a rt domestic flight for 20,000 miles. And I can find $600 rt domestic tickets. That would be 3 cents/mile.
