OP is coming in from Germany for only 2.5 days and said he wanted to "see London town." So I'd say they'd be best served by staying in London town. If they really wanted to see something outside the city I still don't think it'd warrant hiring a car... Bath, Salisbury, Oxford, etc. are all easy by train or bus.
