Call from AA offering flight change

I just got a call supposedly from AA.

I am scheduled to fly JFK-LAX-SAN on Nov 1st.

The person on the phone said "Hello, Mr. XXX, this is AA, we are calling regarding your return flight on Nov 1st. You could fly on the non-stop flight from JFK-to SAN for a $49 re-processing fee".

This has never happened to me ( a call to offer a route change).

I asked if the flights are sold out or something and he said, " no, it is just that you will have a layover of 1hr+ in LAX".

I declined saying that I rather take the routing through LAX cause there is a greater chance of getting upgraded.

I checked both flights and they have availability in Y and F (and D for the JFX-LAX)

Now, my question is, is this a normal call? My email accounts got recently compromised (accessed in China!!!) I considered the remote possibility that someone might have broke into my AA.com account? so I was wondering if the call was legit?

Why would they do such a call?
