What this actually means is DL is getting out of the 787 order, not reaffirming it. No airline orders aircraft 10-12 years in advance, and goodness knows what DL's needs will be by then or what the market will offer -- probably a 777 successor by 2022. This is DL's way of avoiding taking delivery of this aircraft without it or Boeing losing face, and DL will probably walk away with a nice cash settlement from Boeing too over the slipped delivery schedule.
Um....yes they do. AA is still waiting on 777-200ERs, NW waited on more 330-300s. Delta Ordered 777s and ended up taking them pretty late also(only 2-3 of the LRs were new orders, most were converted ER orders in 98 or so). So yes it happens alot, and AFAIK every single US airline has done it.
2020 will be just about them end of the road for the 767-323ER fleet, which the 787-832s will replace perfectly.
