This may be the case with the usual fare buckets, but a number of times I have held a fare (perhaps a spacial sale or similar), and the hold was only until the end of the day per the ticket advance purchase requirements. It isn't often, but it happens.
You are both referring to the automatic hold, which will not override advance purchase restrictions. But I have never had an occasion (and neither have many of my friends here) where I was not able to get the hold extended to the next day by calling the EXP Desk or even Web Services. I'm talking 5-10 times every year over the last 7 years. Try it.
