Correct. Otherwise, AA would have to limit the hold to the earlier of end of the next day or when the fare expires. That's basically what our in-house travel agency does when they put a reservation for any airline on hold. Or AA would need to be very explicit that the fare will go up if you wait until the end of the hold. That is, display a much stronger warning than "the fare is not guaranteed until the ticket is purchased".
I much prefer AA's system than that of DL or CO or others who make you pay for the ticket but allow for a refund within 24 hours.
