My great-grandmother, who was 101 when she died, essentially did this. She didn't speak English, and her decades-old British / Indian passport had no photo and was all hand-written. It has no expiration date, and the only signature is that of the Viceroy who was signing for the Emperor of India, George VI. She started yelling at them (a very effective method in India) until they finally let her through. It was hilarious, because she was about 4-10, 90 lbs, and sitting in a wheel chair. Everybody was laughing.
