I would agree that the current pricing formula makes no sense as it applies to upgradable fares. In previous years I could get an upgradable ticket YVR-YYZ for a premium of ~$200-250 each way, and often did. This year the premium went up to between $400 and $500 each way. With the simultaneous introduction of the preferred seats, I have been doing that for $25 instead of spending >$800 on upgrades. So the net effect has been that AC receives less revenue from me by a few thousand a year. What I don't know is whether that loss of revenue has been offset by sales of the J seats. What I have observed, as recently as last week, are numerous empty J seats that I could have been sitting in (and paying for) if the upgrade premium had been reasonable.
Hence, I also have a mittful of unused certs this year.
