FB members can do this: pay a fee to "up" the fare class to an upgradable one and then UG using miles. I suspect this was offered because the SFO-AMS KL flight is handled by DL staff; in all likelihood if you tried this in AMS it would be "not possible" (het is niet mogelijk).
