I think in your case Aeroplan actually excelled where it usually fails...using good judgement and doing the right thing instead of blindly following the rules.

However, in the OP's circumstance I don't think breaking the ticketing rules is warranted or should be expected...as much as I would personally like Aeroplan to allow changes post departure.
