I had the Hilton Sandton arrange a tour of JNB, including Soweto. The private tour guide/driver was from Soweto and was glad to share his personal story with us. The Hector Peiterson museum is well worth the visit while in Soweto. Arrange a 1/2 day or day tour, you will be glad you did, it was very enlightening and educational.
