As a regular visitor to SA since the mid-90s (I refused to go under the old system), I was personally reluctant to visit Soweto. It seemed to me at the time that I would be looking at other people's problems like a voyeur.
I was wrong! One of my colleagues went on a tour when we were at the Hyatt. He came back raving with enthusiasm. I have since visited Soweto (and other townships) and got much out of it.
Your hotel will almost certainly be able to organise a tour, either as individual/s or with a small group in a limo or minibus. This would be with a Soweto-based operator. This is important as the income goes back into the community.
There is much to see. Remember that Soweto is huge and has been established since the 19th century. The people are intensely proud of their achievements.
If you need persuasion, there is now a Holiday Inn in Soweto.
