Netflix does not restrict your access to their library just because you are on a free trial. Did you give it any feedback by rating movies? As you rate movies it will suggest more that it thinks you will like.

Also, did you scroll through the suggested genres by clicking on the arrow to the far right of each row of title images?

I'm not sure why you think that it wasn't letting you see all it has to offer.
