Not luxury but maybe "remotely luxury", the Hilton Garden in Carlsbad is a great place to stay. The rooms are spacious with a microwave, fridge, and sitting area; the furnishings and decorating are well done, still fresh and clean; it is right across from the ocean; it is easy to get into lovely little Carlsbad if you don't want to eat in; there's a shopping center close by; and last but not least, the managment will do anything and everything to help you out including dropping you off and picking you up. By the way, if you want to go down to San Diego to the zoo, the commuter train from Carlsbad is a convenient short ride and a train ride is fun for kids.
