Heck, my wife got to the gate last week for her PIT-DCA flight with her return, same-day BP.
The downside of course is needing to transfer between terminals and go through security again, and the time required to do that before your flight.
Having a boarding pass does not entitled to access all terminals/concourses at the airport. The TSA is only supposed to grant you access to the terminal/concourse for which you have a flight departing.
In your case and with your wife, mistakes were made which shouldnt be surprising considering the TSAs record.
