I did the same thing for my wife - creating an account with the Tuesday $4 option and a $1 investment. I had entered an account number for the transfer to occur out of on the day of her purchase. Because of the timing she didn't "buy" her share until this week, but the points hit her account last week.
I don't know if you would lose the points if you cancelled prior to the investment happening. But at $5 for 3,000 miles and a hit, I'm happy.
