Not all Red Lions became Doubletrees. In the case of Salt Lake City, Hilton already had a Doubletree at the convention center, where the Red Lion was. So the Red Lion became a Hilton. Hilton no longer wanted its existing Hilton so that property became a Sheraton. Then the Doubletree became a Radison.
Which begs the question, with all these properties trading signs ("flags") so readily, how brand-special can any of them be? You don't see McDonald's and Burger King trading signage like this.
The Doubletree Club in Houston that was mentioned in "Yours is a Very Bad Hotel" was a TraveLodge, a Doubletree Club, a Ramada, and then a Four Points, all within the span of about ten years. So what is it really? Just a random dormitory.
