Are you sure ? Is this a recent change? I was informed by AMEX sometime back (years) that you had to use your card for the applicable insurance to be valid - ie for delayed flight, additional car hire protection etc .

When we had delayed luggage recently and wanted to claim for additional expenses AMEX informed that all purchases had to be on the card. Using my VISA/Mastercard wasn't an option.
