Very interesting! I wonder if those managers' receptions predated the Embassy Suites' receptions.

I do stay at some Doubletrees, some regularly like the one near SFO - both for business and park and fly purposes, and I have to say they treat me consistently well. I'm very interested in what is happening overseas (e.g. Istanbul), but if I am on the road I usually prefer the standardization and benefits of a Hilton Garden Inn, since I know one will pretty much like the other (with a few exceptions), whereas in the CONUS Doubletree can be quite variable. (For those, the reviews on FlyerTalk serve me well, and I occasionally check some other virtual traveler sites as well.)

Yes, Doubletree was considered a luxury hotel brand in those days. Well, at least more luxurious than we are accustomed to these days. Doubletree Club, (Compri in those days) was their entry into the more moderate hotel genre, targeted to women business travelers.
