After further thought, I'm going to take the stand of NEVER using one of these things. If I have to wait an extra 15 minutes, so be it.
1. There is a case in MIA where a TSO went through for training, and his supervisor began making rude comments about the size of his genitals. He eventually lost his cool and beat up a colleague who apparently was also in on the teasing.
That is reason enough for me to NEVER voluntarily go through one of these things. TSA says trust us, then fails the trust test on one of their own employees.
2. TSA says trust us on the radiation level. I'll trust someone with a medical degree, but not random government spokespeople.
3. They don't save time, they actually slow down the line (30+ seconds per person, delays for people to put their boarding pass and wallet through machine).
4. There is evidence these machines wouldn't find hidden explosives in far too many cases.
5. They increase the risk of checkpoint theft as you are out of sight of important papers and valuables for longer periods of time.
I will never VOLUNTARILY go through one of these things. If they become mandatory, I will mail my MVPG card to Alaska and my EXP card to American, with "sternly worded letters" stating why I will no longer fly except when there is no other way to travel.
