They will let other people on the PNR travel if one doesn't show up, but i suspect its a big PITA for a gate agent to handle. We've been late to the airport before, and had the wife and kids fly out without me. (easier for one gold to standby back)

In terms of your empty seat question, it depends on if anyone is flying standby or not. They will stick a revenue standby or a non-rev next to you in the empty seat, regardless if its "blocked" out or not.
