AA Citibank Mastercard SCAM Alert
A few weeks ago, a Citibank telemarketer called regarding a Credit Protector program which offers a $15 gas rebate coupon if you sign up. I wasn't interested until I was advised that if you pay your balance in full by the statement date (i.e. never pay finance charges), there would be no charge for the service and the rebate coupon is mine to keep. I figured it was worth it since I always pay my balances in full by the date due. I got a welcome letter from Citibank, which I don't even open for 10 days. Fortunately, I finally did before the 30 day trial period would have been over. The info contained states that the charge per month is 85 cents per $100 of the "new balance". Since there is always a "new balance" if you use your credit card each month, regardless of whether you pay in full or not, the telemarketer had flat out lied to me. In my case there would be a monthly credit protector fee of over $50 from last month's charges (an atypical high charge month for me of over $5,000). I cancelled the credit protection enrollment (made it by a week before the 30 days would have been up), but figure I'll have to make several more calls once the $50+ fee shows up on my new statement. Live and learn. I expected more of a supposedly reputatble company like Citibank. I suppose those teleslime folks get paid on a commission basis for each Mastercard account they can get to sign up. So here's my Caveat Emptor for all you AA Mastercard customers, just in case they call you.
