Yes, I'm sure it's all a nefarious plot. There couldn't be a simple explanation -- like the devices were originally built for NW and didn't get a firmware upgrade after the merger.
I've had that thought, but I can't remember if NW accepted credit cards on flights -- or even had a plan to do so.
In those days, they didn't charge to check luggage either
