I am really only interested in voice, everything else would be a bonus (or a nuisance...). The smaller, lighter and ruggeder the better! My desire is to keep the number of cables and chargers to a minimum when I travel, but I might consider a charger with interchangeable tips if all else fails. USB is the way to go, though, IMO.

I am considering the Samsung B2100, A637, or A657, and the Nokia 2730, but I don't think any of them can be charged via USB.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much! MM
I own a B2100 (Solid Extreme) and it is the toughest phone I have owned, and before that I had the Samsung Solid which was another tough phone. They have both been knocked about more than should be normal for a phone, for example I dropped the Solid in the (filled) bath during a call and just picked it out and continued the call. It is possible to charge it using USB but you do need the correct cable to do it, these are available on Fleabay or Amazon etc. and they are very cheap (I got mine from Expansys.com which was more expensive but I was using a store credit).

The solid eventally died after 3 years of abuse, when a large heavy hunk of metal fell on it and the screen plastic broke. The phone was still usable although no longer as water resistant (obviously), and previous to that it had been dropped onto concrete from 4 meters up (twice!) on two different building sites with only a scratch to the case, I thought the Solid was very good. By good luck the B2100 was out when the screen broke and I decided given how much I had liked the Solid to get that as my new phone. In Canada at Christmas last year I took pictures on the B2100's camera from the outdoor hot tub and left the phone at the side of the tub whilst I was having a dip.

The Solid is IP(International Protection Rating)54 the Extreme is IP57, & the only phones that I have seen with better toughness specs comes from Sonim and they are very tough IP67 & 68 but at a much higher price. (The Sonims are not BBC journalist proof however )
