Look here. It goes up the Van Wyck and Long Island Expressway through the Midtown Tunnel, stops at Grand Central Station (where you should alight) and continues to the Port Authority.

At Grand Central, transfer to a downtown local train to 23 Street or, more realistically, the downtown M101, M102 or M103 bus to 23rd.
