Got back to the UK after two sectors around SA with BA/C in Y (trip report to follow!) and was very impressed.

I have carry-on luggage which is about an inch smaller in each of the three dimensions than BA's stated maximum. The smallest overhead bins were on a 737-200 and even that was fine.

They do say 7kg for carry-on luggage but this was never checked.
