I am very sorry that you are losing a loved one. From my experience last year, AA is both compassionate and helpful. They allowed me to cancel my award trip as I was concerned about leaving when my father's health was failing so rapidly. They did not charge me any fees, and later walked me through the process of moving his miles to my account after his death.
