N. America to BKK - JAL or Cathay (both AA Codeshare)?

I am trying to do a routing from YYZ to BKK for the end of February. In J/C it is $600 more to go YYZ-YVR-HKG-BKK than going YYZ-LAX-HKG-BKK. In the latter case it is all AA flight #'s not CX all the way as well. And a few more miles, though the YYZ-LAX flight is in a 737 in J, not quite the same as YYZ-YVR in a 777 or 343 in CX's J I suspect.

On the return portion there are no decent CX flights (as it is I'll have to stay in LAX overnight on arrival on a saturday and leave Sunday a.m. but for $600 it is OK), so is JAL via NRT a good option? Vs. the CX service and what apepars to be an incredibly organized operation for connecting in HKG.

Though with the Japanese reputation I am thinking connecting only in NRT might be pretty nice as well. The NRT - LAX flight is it similar class as the J HKG - YYZ flight? Bed type, service, food etc.?

Do I clear Japanese immigration to connect on the BKK arrival in NRT to go to the LAX departure or is it like HKG? I think that in HKG to connect to BKK I don't go thru Thai immigration and do to the Pier or Wing to wait out the last leg.

All advice appreciated.
