The difference is that the case the OP is talking about always credited as separate segments. Some UX flights use the same number for both the outbound and return, and if you ever fly both on the same day, they credited separately even before the change.
so if i am reading this correct, on a flight sna-iah-dca on CO with the same flight number i would also get 2 segments?
