Yes, but this is a little different. You're talking about a direct flight such as UA 935 LHR-LAX-HNL. The OP is talking about a round trip in which the flight number for both segments is the same, such as IAD-BUF-IAD.
I guess I don't see the difference. If flights are credited now based on take-offs and landings then that would apply across the board, whether the 3rd city is the same as the 1st or not. At least that's how I interpret the previous change that made all this happen.
