While I'd love to see AA do some of the same things (don't we all want more of everything, especially miles and status?) I think this reflects what bankruptcy makes you do (compared to your more viable competitors) rather than any desire on the part of UA to be nice.
After all, this is a competitive business. You do what you have to do to hold onto your best customers and, if possible, get more of 'em. If you do more than that, it's bad management.
