I thought so too but they do scan it just before boarding - I always notice a green light flash as an "OK" sign. But is this an airline check or an immigration check?
Surely there must be some level of control/logging linked to Interpol or similar? Where would they catch questionable passports or wanted criminals? Which is exactly my worry - maybe they don't
