I had wondered if you could just get your own MiFi and do a SIM only deal with them. You can get Euro MiFis off Amazon.com. They will work in the US as well, but the frequencies offered are better for non-north American usage.
HAving done that, I've discovered it's very difficult to get firmware updates as Novatel does not support the units directly - you have to get support from the sellers/carrier.
While there are ways to get the firmware, MOST of the ways involve using various file sharing sites which raises the risk of malware.
If you go the amazon/ebay route, try and get it already updated (or make sure the seller can provide the updates).
