I think the issue here is whether the YUP fare is reasonable as they exist in many markets. Expedia's Fare Calendar is helpful for isolating the reasonable ones. I've noticed on some routes where other carriers are offering discount F fares, AA has matched (HP, FL, DL, US to name a few). ATL-LAX is $299 one-way currently.
