I find the guidebooks are interesting to read at home and plan but not so great for lugging around...I combine Lonely Planet and Fodor's.

However, JNTO's website is pretty good when they have a PDF for a location you want and they can give a level of detail not found in guide books. They also let you browse by interest, festival etc.
