You can quite easily go to Nizwa for the day by yourself. There are good buses from the main station in Ruwi and will drop you right in the middle of town in Nizwa. I have done this a few times and it has never been an issue. In Nizwa you can find a taxi to go to some of the other forts nearby if you wish. Make sure you don't do the trip on Friday as everything will be closed.
