The second piece needs to have an exemption tag attached to it. Not sure how you get such a tag, I guess ask at check-in.
I travel with two pieces, one fitting neatly over the handle of the bottom roller piece, and still no problems through KL with them, travelling business class. I think this is aimed at the economy class paxs.
