How about a cheapie flight on WN to SJC and connect to NRT.

Leave yourself plenty of time as they don;t interline, but if you only have hand luggage you are better off.

Of course when AA starts LAX to NRT you also have Phoenix to LAx on Wn as an option.

You could also pick America West if interlining is important to you.
