There would be no contradiction in rules stating that only 1 class upgrade is possible and also providing an economy to 1st redemption rate, though it would not be possible in that case to upgrade a transatlantic flight to 1st class

I follow your logic, but that really doesn't make sense. Let's compare apples to apples here and look at a domestic flight like LAX-MIA, often operated with a mix of two and three-class planes. What they're essentially telling me is that it will cost me 2x the miles to go from Y to F on a domestic 757 than it will Y to J on an int'l configuration 777.
