It's just that since between OLCI and showing up at the airport, the "cert" mention on the BP had disappeared, I suspect they had replaced the cert upgrade by an opup.

Of course, as some other posters have already mentioned, could be that some bug in their system leads to occasional random disappearance of the "cert" thing on the BP?
AC's system is buggy! I can see your point. I don't think they would op-up you after you have decided to burn a cert, unless you ask.
