The thread title has been modified, given the UM fee has not changed in some time.

Personally, I have observed what the airline does for a UM a number of times, and I don't think the $100 is extortionate at all. My child's safety is worth at least as much as my pet's safety... and that's the same fee amount charged for an in-cabin pet.
