The UAE demands (if correctly reported) are outrageous, and I hope that Govt does withdraw from Camp Mirage but also takes further action against the UAE airlines affected.
While I don't know how those airlines got into Australia and NZ in the first place, their strength is fairly obvious as DXB is a logical stop between Aust and Europe. I have a bigger problem understanding exactly where they planned to fly all the pax out of Canada since the highest traffic routes were not geographically sensible. A plan to run a hub in YYZ and operate to spokes beyond that would sure be great in their eyes, but so far out there as far as any bilateral agreements are concerned as to be wishful thinking of the blindest sort.
EK thinks there is plenty of demand for trips to/from Canada (via DXB) to/from various parts of Asia and Africa that they service. Personally, I'd welcome the benefits of the increased competition that EK would provide, especially the benefit for those who need/want to go to/from various parts of South and Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Fighting EK's desired increase in serving Canadian-based customers does no good for the Canada-related VFR traffic to/from Africa and various parts of Asia.
