I buy miles every now and then and use them for a top up, but as you say it's a loyalty scheme not a savings scheme for future flights. However I think if you can usu the 241 scheme via BAAmex they can be great value for money, expecially if you choose your routes carefully and do things yo wouldnt ordinarily pay for!
