There have been more than one occasion when I didn't have anything less than a $5 in my pocket so I may well tip for the first drink with that $5 and make sure to go back to the same bartender for one additional drink. But I wouldn't think to push my luck with a third off that same $5.
Well, I'd get my third off the $5. But on Sunday I asked for change for a $20 at the same time as the first drink so I could leave a dollar. I'm pretty sure the bartender was appreciative considering nobody else was tipping.
