The 12 week limit is important for the train - and you can get some bargain first class seats at that time too, worth it for a long journey like that.

The only downside of the train is its sheer popularity these days - whatever you do, make sure you get a reservation.

Finally, book it through one of the train companies - http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/ has a good booking engine that supports transactions from abroad. Booking from an agency will always cost you more. Booking directly via http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/ may give you access to some additional promotions, but you need to check if it accepts transactions from abroad.
