To give you a data point the other way my coach to business upgrade DFW-FRA on a 777 just cleared yesterday. This is about two weeks prior to my Monday departure. Requested the upgrade when I purchased the tickets two weeks previous. They were showing 20 empty seats prior to the upgrade (19 now). Galileo shows J7, C0. I'm just regular AAdvantage member (will be Gold after this flight) so I didn't get the upgrade based on elite status.
I had my choice of ORD or DFW for my connection and picked DFW because of the better shot at upgrades based on the advise on this board though I suspect I'd prefer the 767 service more. But if you can't get it....
