LH fare is great, I have used it regularly for the past 5+ years. The only problem is that it does not allow anything else than SYD-SFO/LAX-FRA. Return either via SIN or BKK (BKK being significantly cheaper). Anything you do in states is on your own, potentially increasing the cost. SYD-SFO is on UA in their new business class, meaning fully flat, horizontal seats. The rest is on LH (sloping flat seats that I do not mind) and between Asia and AU either sloping flat seats on TG or SQ (with possibility of that horrible business class bed in A380).

Alternativelly, LX has similar fare. Until recently, it has been locked to SYD-JFK-Europe, but with introduction of ZRH-SFO flight, they may open it that way too...
