My dad retired some years ago, before I started doing any serious flying and when "miles" meant something quite different to me.
He had accumulated (as I recall) 60,000 BIS/RDM, but wasn't planning on flying much, if at all (and he has been on exactly one round-trip since then). Why waste the miles, we thought.
I was named after him. After a quick consult with pops, I called AA and spun a small lie, convincing AA I was my dad. I received a new password, logged into aa.com, and the rest is history (of a particularly mundane sort, but hey...).

When I screw up I try to fix it within the T&C's - if I can't, I ask for a mulligan. I usually get it. Most company reps are nice* and if you explain the goof up they try to help you. I've had many people go out of their way to accommodate me when I screw up and ask for help.... maybe OP has just never had that happen.
