I see your point but I'm not sure if it is worth it for the relatively fewer people on the "through flights" to push this. Methinks there are far more people who benefit when they receive 500 non-actual miles.
Not to worry! US specifically lists the 500-mile segment minimum as a perk for Preferreds.
